OASIS’s pilot retreat, appropriately named Premier, occured on November 21, 22, and 23, 2008.

On Friday, November 21, the 26 boys from the Durham Nativity School (DNS) participated in pre-retreat activities at DNS. These activities included a brief interactive talk by Tony Brown, director of the Robertson scholars program at Duke University and UNC, small group debrief, an introductory movie, creating team names and banners, and several fun games and competitions.

On Saturday, November 22, we went to Camp Chestnut Ridge. We learned archery, tackled a high and low ropes course, made s’mores, had several small group debriefing session, and played lots of fun competitions. We also had a special guest a cappella performance by Speak of the Devil, an a cappella group from Duke University, who sang around a campfire.

On Sunday, November 23, we partnered with a living group at Duke University called Ubuntu to take students to Duke University for a huge Dodgeball Tournament. This tournament involved all the DNS participants, OASIS leaders, and several other college students from Duke. After the tournament, we ate dinner, and watched football.

We had several caterers and special donors for the event. Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Mad Hatter’s Bakeshop and Cafe, Tommy’s Rubs & Grubs (also known off Duke’s campus as “The Q Shack”), and Twinnie’s Cafe all provided us with a generous amount of food. Duke University Stores provided the t-shirts for the event (which were distributed to all students), and we also had a generous donation given by the Robertson Scholars Program.
